Hikkaduwa National Park



Hikkaduwa is one of beautiful coastal area in Sri Lanka which locate 99km south from Colombo. The most important thing is Hikkaduwa is one of the two marine national parks in Sri Lanka. It is rich from fringing coral reef of high degree of biodiversity. Hikkaduwa declared as wildlife sanctuary on may 18, 1979 and it was upgraded to as a nature reserve on august 14, 1988. After that on September 19, 2002 it was declare as a National Park.

The coral reef with an average depth of 5 meters. Coast of coral reef around 4 km. The coral reef forms a breakwater which is cause to reduce coastal erosion.

Sri Lanka officially called Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka. However, before 1972 it called as Ceylon (English) and as Taprobane (Greek) & Serendib (Arabs) in ancient times. It is island in South Asia & 31 km far from southern cost of India. Sri Lanka was act major role in navel in ancient. In addition, it was a center of Buddhism. Majority of them are Buddhist. However, Hinduism, Christianity and Islam are also lived in this country.

Sri Lanka Tea, Rubber & Coconut world famous products of Sri Lanka. Majority of Sri Lankans are farmers. It was rule 2000 years by local kingdoms. In 1500’s Portugal and the Netherlands were rule some coast areas of Sri Lanka & it ceded to the British Empire in 1815.

The distance between Indian subcontinent & Sri Lanka is 31km only. Shortest points are Gulf of Mannar & Rameswaram in Sri Lanka & India respectively.
